Create 3-D art with kids as young as 3 while teaching them about the science principle called states of matter.
Science Behind Experiment:
Did you know that shaving cream exists in three states of matter just like water? It exists in a liquid, solid, and gas! The reason why shaving cream is foamy is because of the gas inside the can. The gas is what turns the shaving cream into foam. Shaving cream is also a liquid and solid due to the consistency of the shaving cream. At first, the shaving cream is a solid but as time goes on, the shaving cream will soon turn into a liquid!
When you soak the bill in an alcohol-water solution, the alcohol has a high vapor pressure and is mainly on the outside of the bill. Once you lit the bill on fire, the alcohol which is on the outside of the bill is what is burning. The temperature at which the alcohol burns is not high enough to evaporate the water, which has a high specific heat, so the bill remains wet and isn’t able to catch fire on its own. After the alcohol has burned, the flame goes out, leaving a slightly damp dollar bill.

A chemical reaction is the change of a substance into a new one that has a different chemical identity. The yeast mixed with Dr. H’s special solution created an exothermic reaction that released heat. This means that the total energy it took to break down the bonds is less than the total energy released when forming new bonds — so the net energy is released in the form of heat.
